About
Soprano Isobel Anthony has been noted for her “warm timbre, effortless and agile” (Olyrix, France) and for her “vocal assuredness far beyond her years and a natural stage presence” (Chicago Classical Review, USA). Highlights from the 2024-25 season include her role and house debut as Sylvia in L’isola disabitata at Paris Opera; her Palais Garnier debut singing Leïla (Les pêcheurs de perles) in concert excerpts with the Paris Opera orchestra; and her return to Santa Fe Opera for her role debut as Barbarina in Le nozze di Figaro, where she will also cover Susanna and Flora (Turn of the Screw). Isobel was a finalist in the 2025 Tenor Viñas Competition in Barcelona, Spain. She is a 2024 recipient of the Richard F. Gold Career Grant from the Shoshana Foundation and is currently an Artist in Residence with the Académie at Paris Opera.
During the 2023-2024 season, Isobel made her Lyric Opera of Chicago debut as Female Narrator in Jason and the Argonauts and her Santa Fe Opera debut as Woman 1/Jenny in the world premiere of Gregory Spear’s The Righteous, in addition to singing Noble Orphan 1 and covering Sophie in Santa Fe Opera’s production of Der Rosenkavalier. Another highlight includes singing the role of Mother Nature in the U.S. premiere of Emily: A Musical Portrait at Wolf Trap Opera, where she has previously been a Studio Artist. Last season, Isobel sang with four-time GRAMMY-winning choir, The Crossing, on the album “Ochre,” which just won the GRAMMY Award for Best Choral Performance.
Her performance work includes several premieres: two world premieres by composers Max Vinetz and Hannah Gruendemann in a solo recital at the Bienen School of Music; soloist on the world premiere of David Lang’s in nature with The Crossing; and Diana in the Midwest premiere of Jake Heggie’s If I Were You. She has performed as the soprano soloist in Luciano Berio’s Sinfonia at Bienen and as the Vocalist in Pierrot Lunaire at Yale University. She is a founding member of New York-based vocal chamber ensemble Fourth Wall, with three albums and a film score (Jeff Beal’s score for The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari). Her work also includes solo vocals on eight motion pictures, most recently Raya and the Last Dragon, The Jungle Cruise, and News of the World.
Isobel received her Master’s degree from Northwestern University (Voice and Opera) and her Bachelor’s degree from Yale University (Linguistics, Magna cum laude) where she served as the Artistic Director of the Opera Theatre of Yale College. During her time there, she was also a member of Yale’s Schola Cantorum with David Hill, with whom she toured internationally and recorded three albums on the Hyperion label.
